Detoxification and Hyperthermia Treatments

For over 2,000 years, the idea of increasing the body’s temperature has been associated with healing, preventative and cleansing properties. Fever is the body’s natural defence system that raises its temperature above normal in an attempt to destroy invading organisms and sweat impurities out of the system. For centuries, sauna has been used to create the same effect. Sauna is also used to boost metabolism, as when pulse rates increase, blood vessels become much more flexible, extremities benefit from increased circulation and toxins are excreted through sweat and on the breath.

Increasing the body’s temperature helps the body’s immune system to fight infection. It is well-known that in a number of infectious illnesses, the body temperature rises. This is partly because substances called pyrogens, released from the tissues, alter the temperature control mechanisms of the body and set the thermostats at a higher level. This automatic control of body temperature can be overridden by using external heat supplies to increase the body temperature. Whenever the temperature of the body is caused to rise, then metabolism and secretion are accelerated.

Breakspear’s IRATHERM® whole body hyperthermia bed not only raises body surface temperature, as does a sauna, but also raises body core temperature, which can have a major therapeutic effect. Using the hyperthermia infrared-A bed at Breakspear, we have a means by which the whole body can be heated, which can cause the core temperature of the body to be raised by several degrees centigrade. Most other forms of heat therapy raise the core temperature by only tenths of a degree. It is clear that using infrared-A as a source of heat is much more effective than conventional means.

The IRATHERM® was developed by the German-based Von Ardenne Institute of Applied Medical Research. For over 40 years, Von Ardenne has been undertaking research, development and application of systems for warming up the whole body. Breakspear is the only facility in the United Kingdom to offer this method of treatment.

Hyperthermia treatments have been used for detoxification and removal of pollutants. The measurement of DNA adducts and effects of hyperthermia will be described in the presentation.

About Dr Jean Monro

Internationally recognised in the field of allergy and environmental medicine, Dr Jean Monro is the Medical Director and founder of privately-owned Breakspear Medical Group Ltd.

Fully committed, Dr Monro has focused on this specialist area for much of her career and successfully treats a wide variety of conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Lyme disease and multiple chemical sensitivity, using certified laboratory tests to detect and address underlying infections and nutritional deficiencies, and by using low-dose immunotherapy as a foundation to rebuilding healthy immune systems.

In addition to treating patients at Breakspear Medical, Dr Monro lectures regularly at conferences around the world, supervises hands-on training of university and college students specialising in nutrition, and is often asked to write medical articles for various magazines.

Neurodegenerative Conditions in Alzheimer’s

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated the following:
Cognition is a combination of mental processes that includes the ability to learn new things, intuition, judgement, language, and remembering. When cognition is impaired (referred to as cognitive impairment), a person has trouble with these processes that begins to affect the things he or she can do in everyday life. People of all ages can experience cognitive impairment, which can range from mild to severe. Cognitive impairment is not caused by any one disease or condition. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury can cause cognitive impairment. Some causes of cognitive impairment are related to treatable health issues (e.g., medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, and depression).

Cognitive decline is a major concern of the ageing population and Alzheimer’s is the major cause of age-related cognitive decline, with 30 million affected globally. Women comprise 65% of the patients. A network-based therapeutic approach, rather than a single target-based approach, for Alzheimer’s is feasible because of multiple pathogenic targets for potential metabolic intervention. Parkinson’s disease will also be addressed. [expand title=”Read more…”]

Toxic Exposures
Neurotoxins can alter enzyme functions, neurotransmitter metabolism, glutathione synthesis, methylation or mitochondrial function. They exhaust antioxidant reserves, reducing glutathione and increasing oxidative stress, and they may overwhelm detoxification pathways such as glutathione or methylation pathways or cause a Phase I to Phase II detoxification mismatch; hence the response to symptoms and toxic effects in an environmental exposure depends on an individual’s enzyme function and detoxification capacity, their nutritional status, their inheritance and cumulative toxic exposure load. Detox capacity can be compromised with age, other diseases or inheritance.

Toxic element symptoms are often vague, due to multiple cumulative exposures, for example: fatigue, weakness, irritability, anxiety, memory loss, insomnia, peripheral neuropathy and tremors.

Cognitive Enhancement
Chronological age is not the same as biological age. There are many biological factors that can be altered to reduce chronological ageing features, and this will be discussed. Dr Monro will also run a Q&A session. [/expand]

Detoxification: An Old Idea with Modern Research Support

The concept of toxins being an important cause of disease and detoxification improving health has been integral to natural healing for centuries. Substantial research now shows that industrial toxins have indeed become a serious problem in the industrial world and that detoxification protocols are effective. This presentation provides documented protocols and illustrative case histories and will be delivered via live video link.

Conventional Laboratory Tests to Assess Toxic Load

Challenges for assessing patient toxic load include expense, complexity, and uncertainty. If we can directly measure a toxin, the easier it is to find the source and monitor progress. The problem is the wide variety of sources and toxins—from metals to many chemicals, especially persistent organic pollutants. Recent research shows that many conventional labs, such ALT, bilirubin, and even the CBC—within the supposed “normal” range—can tell us a lot about toxic load.

Dr. Pizzorno will give his second and final presentation via live video link and delegates will get a chance to ask their questions in a Q&A session.
